As artists of all stripes embrace the moving image, and works in the medium are displayed in black boxes, white cubes and public spaces throughout the world, it is no surprise that this multi-faceted production is accompanied by a flood of publications. “New Books,” the title of this issue, is accurate: all bound, printed volumes, all recent. Of the twelve books reviewed in this issue, five were published in 2015, four in 2014 and one in 2012. But the set is no more than a sample.
On the other hand, the variety of subjects and stylistic approaches in the set of books is representative of a broad, exciting and explosive field. Four are anthologies, eight by single authors. They address works from specific regions, provide historical studies and explorations of theoretical issues. The writing ranges from casual and personal to precise and academic. While unified in their consideration of topics central to artists’ cinema, the books exhibit intensive contrast in their methods and aims. Richly defiant of easy categorization, these books are dynamic and packed with insights, qualities reflected in the short reviews that comprise this issue.
