MFJ 45/46 “Hybrids”

Fall 2006

This issue of the Millennium Film Journal explores and celebrates the notion of the hybrid: the mutant forms of art that emerge out of the ubiquity of the moving image, the availability of the tools of production, the breadth of distribution, and the imagination of the moving image artist. MFJ No. 45 “Hybrids” includes articles by Michael Betancourt on the first abstract filmmaker, Mary Hallock-Greenewalt, whose work in film grew out of her development of an organ that produced both music and colored light; Jessica Ruff i n ’s diary of her experiences attending live video events in New York City during the summer of 2005; Jackie Hatfield’s interview with veteran filmmaker/artist Malcolm LeGrice who has experimented for over 40 years with every available moving image format; and project descriptions by Chris Welsby, who made the first British sculptural film installation in the early 1970s. There are also texts about the work of artists Guy Maddin, Glen Fogel, Victoria Vesna, Steven Matheson, and the performance duo nicoykatiushka, as well as an extensive interview by Laura Coombs with film-/video-maker and installation artist Leighton Pierce.
